What Really Happens to the Stuff We Pick Up With Our Utah County Junk Removal

When people hire us for Utah County Junk Removal, they often ask where everything goes once it’s loaded up. The short answer: not everything goes to the dump. We sort, recycle, rehome, and donate as much as possible before anything heads to a landfill.

We’re also lucky to live in Utah County, where we have plenty of great options to handle materials responsibly. There are multiple transfer stations—like the ones in Lindon and Spanish Fork—as well as donation centers throughout Orem, Provo, and Springville. When it comes to metal recycling, there are facilities from Genola all the way up to Pleasant Grove, plus the Payson Landfill for final disposal. Having all these resources so close makes it easier for us to keep usable and recyclable materials out of the landfill whenever possible

Furniture and Household Items Go to Donation Centers

We donate everything that’s still usable or in working condition—furniture, clothing, electronics, appliances, décor, and more. When washers, dryers, or other large appliances are still functional, we bring them to donation centers that help families in need. Sometimes, we’re even able to connect these items directly to individuals who can use them right away.

Donation centers play a big role in keeping good-quality items in the community where they can do the most good. Instead of ending up in a landfill, someone else gets a chance to make use of them. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

However, donation centers also have to follow guidelines about what they can accept. Most won’t take:

  • Broken or overly used furniture

  • Mattresses, cribs, or car seats (for health and safety reasons)

Because of these policies, not everything can be donated—no matter how much we’d like to. In this particular job, the couches were too worn and damaged to meet donation standards, so they had to go out with the garbage instead.

Metal and Broken Appliances Get Recycled

Metal items like washers, dryers, and other appliances are almost always recycled when they are no longer working. Most appliances are made of steel, aluminum, and other metals that can be melted down and reused to create new products—everything from car parts to construction materials.

When we remove old or broken metal items, we take them to local metal recycling centers where they’re sorted, stripped of non-metal components, and prepared for processing. This keeps heavy, bulky materials out of the landfill and helps reduce the need to mine new raw materials.

On this particular job, both the washer and dryer were beyond repair, so instead of sending them to the dump, we hauled them straight to a local recycling facility. It’s a small extra step that makes a big difference over time—especially with how many appliances and metal items we pick up each month.

What Happens to the Rest

Items that can’t be donated or recycled are taken to transfer stations or landfills. That included the broken chairs from this haul. We do everything we can to minimize what goes there, but not everything can be saved.

In some cases—especially on large cleanouts—customers request that everything be removed quickly without sorting. In those situations, we’ll load everything up and take it to the dump, but we still try to recycle and donate whenever we can before disposal.
